Iowa Steel
Trump announces a $15 billion Iowa steel plant that the White House calls the largest in U.S.

Trump unveiled plans Monday for a $15 billion steel plant in Iowa. It will be the largest ever built in the United States, the White House says.
Fox News reported the plant is projected to produce 7.5 million tons of steel a year in its first phase, eventually climbing to 10 million tons annually. That output would equal roughly a tenth of everything the U.S. steel industry made last year, according to Fox News. The first phase alone is expected to create 1,750 permanent jobs and 5,000 to 6,000 construction jobs, Fox News reported, citing White House figures.
Trump announced the plan from the Oval Office at 2 p.m., flanked by executives from Mesabi Metallics, a White House official told Fox News Digital. Mesabi plans to supply the plant with iron ore mined at its own operation in Minnesota. Officials call that a fully domestic supply chain. Trump has pointed to investment announcements like this one as proof his tariffs and other economic policies are pulling manufacturing back to the United States, Fox News reported.
Iowa matters right now. Democrats view the state as a chance to flip congressional seats in the midterms, NBC News reported. The plant lands just over a month before voters go to the polls.
Mesabi's Minnesota mine carries its own long history, dating back nearly two decades. The mine ran into years of financing trouble before its earlier owner, Essar Steel Minnesota, filed for bankruptcy in 2016, then emerged from that bankruptcy as Mesabi Metallics, with Essar later regaining control, according to Fox News. Mining and commissioning work has started there, Fox News reported, though commercial production of iron pellets has not begun. A securities filing cited by Fox News targets initial pellet output for the fourth quarter of 2026, followed by an eight to 12 month ramp-up to full commercial production.
National security matters here too. Officials say the Iowa plant will be capable of producing high-grade steel for defense needs, according to Fox News, as they look to strengthen domestic supply chains for military and infrastructure materials.
Trump used the same Oval Office platform this week for other sweeping declarations. He signed a separate executive order renaming artificial intelligence "superintelligence" across federal agencies, The Guardian reported. A related industry pact, he told reporters, was "almost like a constitution."
2030. That's when Mesabi expects the Iowa facility to produce its first steel, Fox News reported.
"President Trump is delivering on his promise to rebuild American industry, reshore manufacturing, and create new jobs," White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told Fox News Digital.
