A gunman opened fire inside a Spirit Halloween store in Fairfield, California. One person is dead. Six others are wounded, police said.

Officers responded to the Solano Town Center mall around 8:30 p.m. Friday and found seven people shot, according to a police department statement cited by ABC News. One victim died. The other six went to local hospitals. Police said at least three were in critical condition.

Fairfield Police Chief Dan Marshall addressed reporters just before midnight. He asked anyone with information to come forward. "I know the mall has cameras, so hopefully we'll get some of that footage," Marshall said, according to ABC News.

No suspect has been identified. Not yet. Police called the Spirit Halloween store an active crime scene. Detectives are interviewing witnesses as they work to determine who fired the shots and why.

Friday's shooting hit during the busiest shopping weekend of the Halloween season. The National Retail Federation had forecast that Americans would spend $13.5 billion on Halloween this year, a record and a 3% jump from last year, NPR reported. That works out to $115 per person, 55 cents more than in 2025, despite candy prices that climbed more than 18% over two years.

Solano Town Center sits in Fairfield, a city of roughly 120,000 people between San Francisco and Sacramento. The mall houses the Spirit Halloween pop-up among its regular retail tenants, a seasonal fixture that opens each fall and closes after the holiday.

Fairfield police have not released the ages or identities of the victim who died or the six who were wounded. Nor have they said whether the shooting followed an argument, a robbery or some other dispute, or whether the gunman acted alone.

Detectives are reviewing mall surveillance video, Marshall said.
