One person died. Eight others were wounded. Gunfire broke out after a college football rivalry game in Birmingham, Alabama, police said Saturday night.

Shots rang out near Legion Field shortly after 7:50 p.m., just blocks from where the Magic City Classic had wrapped up minutes earlier, CNN and ABC News reported. Nine people were hit in all, Officer De'Rell Freeman told reporters, including the one who died. One victim remained in critical condition. Seven others were stable, Freeman said.

Multiple firearms, recovered at the scene. Freeman said officers also detained one person for questioning at Birmingham police headquarters. "An active scene with developing information," he called it, according to ABC News.

Most fans had already left Legion Field after the game, Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said. The shooting happened nearby, where vendors had set up tents along Graymont Avenue, Pickett told The Guardian. "Very grateful that more people weren't injured," he said, according to CNN.

Nearly 70,000 fans had packed the stadium for a rivalry stretching back more than a century, the annual matchup between Alabama A&M and Alabama State, two of the state's largest historically Black universities, The Guardian reported. Alabama A&M won, 31-28.

Senseless, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin called it. "There is no argument, no beef, no misunderstanding that can justify this level of senseless violence during a night of celebration," he wrote in a statement carried by CNN and ABC News. He pledged "swift justice" for whoever opened fire.

Police suspended all Magic City Classic tailgating after the shooting. They ordered the stadium grounds cleared, CNN reported. Investigators asked witnesses to send in video through an anonymous tip line.

Gunfire has hit gatherings across the country this fall. Six of eleven people wounded a week earlier near Florida A&M University in Tallahassee were juveniles, shot during a fight, CNN reported. That same Halloween weekend, separate shootings killed four and hurt 15 in a Dallas neighborhood, wounded six near the University of Delaware in Newark, and hurt six more in Fayetteville, Arkansas, according to WRAL.

Birmingham police said the investigation continues. No charges had been filed by Saturday night.
